I don't know about whether these guys are smarter than a fifth grader, but they sure are more interesting than the adults who compete on that show.
How to amuse a dog? There are days when running around outside just can't happen because it is too cold, snowy, or I am just lazy. And since it doesn't snow here, lazy wins. But since Lulu and Phoebe need to burn off the energy we've come up with some little ways to exhaust them.
Don't underestimate the value of dog tricks. They are great for dinner party entertainment after everyone has had a drink or two. Tricks are great when you have relatives over because you don't have to talk to anyone if you are busy showing off your canine's genius. And this stuff is especially great for the times when small children are not sure they like dogs. Having a dog twirl around on command sends most small children into fits of giggles.
Mental exercises are a good way to drain the batteries. If you learn a few methods for shaping tricks there are lots more things you can dream up.
In this first video, they are doing a Nina Ottosson dog puzzle, called the Dog Brick. You set treats under some of the tiles and they have to push the right tiles to get access to the treat. Phoebe, by virtue of size, usually out maneuvers Lulu when they do the puzzle together. You can see Lulu looking to me to arbitrate, but I let them work it out together. They get time to do the puzzle alone so that each can get all the treats. That way I usually don't get a letter of dispute from Ms. Lulu later on in the day on unfair labor practices.
The next video is where they learned to do a thing called "walkies" which is to walk on their hind legs to get to the treat. Lots of dogs can do that trick. But the next part is just for fun. They have to gently lean into one another to get the yogurt off the spoon. It looks rather easy, but keep in mind that Phoebe can blow on Lulu and knock her over, so they both have to balance and think about it as they do this or they both fall over.
Some people say I have too much time on my hands. However, I prefer to look at it as a way to teach the old dog (me) new tricks. And Lulu and Phoebe are the willing muses as long as I keep the treats coming.

dog snuggies!
those are some very lucky dogs, and those videos are both so adorable. the frenzy with the puzzle is like piranha.

I'm sure I was less graceful than Lulu and Phoebe are in the second video when I was attempting to learn ballet. =o)
oh, lord, i love this. it's so funny and cool. those girls are the best. now why do they wear their sweaters indoors, or is it just for videos? the sweaters themselves are awesome. where do you get them or do you knit them? i'd love that dog puzzle for coco. ella is dumb as dirt, sadly. but very beautiful. where did you get the dog puzzle? sorry, this is more of me coveting everything you have than a post commentary. love love love and keep sharing. rated for fabulousness.
I will sleep well tonight, after watching Lulu and Phoebe dance! And the dog tricks are kind of amazing -- I've never seen that before. Very cool! (I have a video of my cat doing tricks. Do you have to put it on You Tube first and THEN put it on Open Salon? )
I found myself shrieking and pointing at the screen when treats were revealed but not found in that puzzle. This was more entertaining that I like to admit. And those sweaters are so chic.
Rarely have I been so delighted as when watching Lulu and Phoebe throw themselves into the dog puzzle, such intensity, such focus - I love it, as do they obviously.
The girls are magnificent in mauve!!! What fabulous tricks and that puzzle is AWESOME!!!

Oh yhea ... I also thought you should have titled this, "How To Amuse A Human" ... I've watched the dancing one like 4 times now ...
Devon, yes! tiny slankets! Our house is chilly.
Emma - thank you. Now they want to join SAG
Jane - yeah, perfect. Phoebe does do piranha well, doesn't she?!
Shiral - me too.
Teddy, thank you! yes, they wear sweaters inside because I refuse to turn on the heat. They have little hair so they freeze. Actually they are fleece pullovers and there is a lovely woman who makes the purple fleece in TX and will make them to order for a really great price. Barkandstuff.com.
suzie - thank you! hope you slept well. yes, youtube first and then copy the embedded code and use the html here and paste and update and there it is.
Thank you Kind of Blue!
Mumbletypeg - I was there and I still shriek at the video telling Lulu to "get it!". I can't believe they both missed that until the vacuum cleaner sucked them up (Phoebe). Thanks!
Blackpaw - thank you. I was hesitant at first thinking they wouldn't be able to do it, but it only took a few minutes for them to sniff it out. I am amazed at how smart dogs are (all dogs!). Thanks!
Ann - notice the title is changed.... The dance is great. Once you realize they have to balance up there and not knock each other over, it is hilarious. They can go forever doing that. Now we have to work on the foot movement, 1,2,3,. (yes, kidding!).
M - amuse is good! the goddog children send their love.

I am dysfunctional in the tricks department and very jealous of these talented pooches. David Letterman, here we come.
I love the constant snorts in the first video while they try to get to the treats! Of course, I'll tell Abigail that it's Phoebe snorting, not Lulu so as not to ruin her demure image in Abby's eyes. The tiny girls have to stick together.
I don't care who you are. Bostons are the best-est, handsome-est, prettiest, awesome-est, coolest, super-est, best personality-est dogs in the world. They are also the most posh. (Frenchies come in a close second.)
Rated.
On another note, there once was a Boston dog named Lulu, known as the "HMB." She was the poster dog for a pet product company called High Maintenance Bitch that manufactured dog accessories (including its most popular feather dog collar), among other novelty dog products based in the Northwest. Lulu was to die for. I still have one of HMB's books called "The High Maintenance Bitch Owner's Manuel: It's not about being a dog, it's about being a bitch,"
by Lori Pacchiano and Ryan Pacchiano.
HMB isn't' around any more. I suspect its owners fell victim to this economy.

Somyr - I found the book. Hilarious! This Lulu is jealous and little bit peevish as I read her passages out loud. She wonders if THAT Lulu spent time in France shopping for couture???? Or has her very own internet connection and credit card for such things??? She thinks not.
Seriously, that was a great find, thank you! Lulu (and Phoebe) maintain a couple of blogs, one is about Paris and the other is their Diary. They are relentless attention whores. Thankfully, they are cute.

The dog puzzle was great! (rated for the twelve times I've seen the videos)
